Food and facilities

A light breakfast is included in the price of your room, with options such as freshly squeezed orange juice, local fruit, and fresh breads. We also offer a full breakfast that normally includes Belizean stewed beans and local eggs cooked with chaya or Belizean sausage. We can provide an evening meal which is available on request. Our food is Belizean style home cooking, but our menu is always flexible to suit your tastes.

The ingredients that we use are very local and very fresh: most fruit and vegetables come from the market in San Ignacio, if not our own farm.

We can cater to most dietary requirements with prior notice.

Dining room

The guest kitchen is always open, and is well equipped with tea, coffee, salt and pepper as well as a good selection of basic (non electric) cooking utensils, an oven and stove, and a small fridge. There is a small shop in the village where you can buy basic ingredients, but it is a good idea to bring most food with you.

We have a light, airy dining room with views straight out into the trees.

Eating out

There are a couple of good options for eating out nearby.

  • The Seven Miles/El Progresso Women's Cooperative serves Central American-style snacks (and sells local handcrafts and gifts!) from a small shop in the middle of the village &dnash; 0.75 miles from Checo Hill Farm.
  • The First Stop restaurant (at the junction of the Chiquibul and San Antonio roads, on the way to the Mountain Pine Ridge) offers local specialities including burritos, garnaches, tostadas, rice and beans, etc. They're open from 6am to 8pm every day and are about 2.5 miles from Checo Hill.

(You can also call into Blancaneaux Lodge in the Mountain Pine Ridge to try out the excellent pizzas, made with organic ingredients grown at the lodge itself... A good way to add a touch of luxury to a day exploring the wilder parts of the forest reserve!)

Our lounge in an excellent place for relaxing - well equipped with comfortable chairs, a small library of reference books about the natural history of the area, and a selection of novels to read while you are here, or to swap with your own books.

Purified drinking water is always available in the lounge: we recommend that you refill your bottles here to save on waste!

Services and facilities

We can wash a load of laundry for you for Bz$12 (US$6). All laundry is air-dried – we don't have a clothes drier.

Internet and phone

We have limited internet access at Checo Hill! It's best to assume you will unplug and switch off during your stay, although it's possible to send and receive emails. (Our system can't support large uploads or downloads.) We have very poor cell phone coverage at Checo Hill, but you can use our phone to call out if necessary.

Mountain bikes

We have mountain bikes available for you to borrow to explore the local area.

You can explore our farm – and climb Checo Hill, with fanastic views from the summit – via our forest trails. A map of the trails is available in the lounge, and we can show you around if you'd like to learn more about the place.
